Masked Identity
Masked Identity
The introverted box, 2017 |
With this mask, my intention was to show the true self of me, the part that not a
lot of people see or the part that not a lot of people know about. But apart from it,
it resembles the kind of people that have these same characteristics. Being a shy
and introverted person is often a struggle for people like me, and it can take away a
lot from our lives. It basically shields us from the rest of the world; it gave the world
the perspective that we are flat-faced, not open and closed from everything.
We tend to seclude ourself from the world, and not show our weaknesses. But behind
the mask lies a more profound and more beautiful person.
The style and concept behind the mask are taken from the idea of being secluded
from the world and not revealing who we are. It's like having a giant box over your
head and covering up your true identity. But by covering our face, it doesn't mean
that we don't want to look outside in the world. The cylinders on each side of the
mask, are the small peepholes, that we try to take a peek out. However, these holes
are covered not to let anyone look inside.
The cylinder on the front side is there to represent a cup over a mouth. A container that is
holding behind a person from speaking its true self, but the cup is placed by the person
that is trying to speak out. They don't want to say anything so that the attention from
the outside world turns to them. They want to be secluded.
What is not realized when we try to seclude ourselves from the world, is the fact that
time does not stop when we do it. Time keeps on going on. Meanwhile, we are still
stuck their hiding. Time is a thing that we don't have control over, the same as
sometimes we don't have control over our shyness.
I chose to leave my mask entirely white blank, this does not make the mask that
attractive and appealing to the eye. The intention behind that is solely based on the
matter of introverts not being seen and hiding behind their "mask." I wanted to make
it as emotionless as possible. The last attractive it is true that Eye, The better it is.
Meaning that they are still hidden within the whole realm of society.
